We invite applications for a motivated Research Assistant / Associate to become an integral part of Dr. Heather Machado's laboratory within the Department of Pathology at the University of Cambridge. The Machado Lab focuses on the interplay between tumor and immune cells and their roles in cancer development. Utilizing techniques from evolutionary genetics and multi-omic datasets, we investigate critical questions such as the timing of immune responses to cancer, the impact of inflammation on immune remodeling, and the somatic evolution of immune responses to immunotherapy.
We are seeking a researcher to lead the establishment of laboratory protocols and oversee data generation initiatives. Key responsibilities encompass tissue processing, flow cytometry, sequencing library preparation, and optimization of protocols. Candidates should possess exceptional organizational skills and demonstrate the ability to work autonomously.
The appointment at the Research Associate level is contingent upon the possession of a PhD; candidates without a PhD will be appointed at the Research Assistant level.
Those who have submitted their PhD thesis but have not yet received their degree will initially be appointed as Research Assistants, with the position upgraded to Research Associate upon awarding of the PhD.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Proficiency in general molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, DNA/RNA extraction)
- Experience in flow cytometry (or a willingness to learn)
- Ability to troubleshoot protocols
- Strong organizational skills, including meticulous documentation of experiments and results
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
- Capability to manage time effectively and work independently
- Enthusiasm for collaboration in a multidisciplinary environment
- A minimum of 2 years of relevant laboratory experience
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Experience with tissue dissociation (e.g., tumor samples)
- Proficiency in flow cytometry of immune cell populations
- Skills in isolating peripheral blood mononuclear cells
- Experience in sequencing library construction
- Familiarity with programming in R
This is a fixed-term position, with funding available for an initial period of 3 years.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment upon acceptance of an employment offer.
