Job Overview

Objective
We are seeking a skilled Propulsion Test Technician to become a vital part of our Propulsion Engine Test Centre at UTAC. The successful candidate will oversee the operation of propulsion systems within a testing environment, managing all related tasks from initial setup to test cell configuration, maintenance, and execution of both automated and manual testing sequences. This role is essential for the successful delivery of comprehensive customer test programs across a range of prototype units, focusing on efficiency, emissions, and performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all health, safety, and quality protocols.
  • Assist in the installation and configuration of instrumentation and test cell automation systems as directed by the engineering team.
  • Validate engine operations and associated fluid and boost conditioning systems within the test cell.
  • Collaborate with the team to fulfill customer testing requirements for specific development programs.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical faults, working closely with the engineering team to implement effective solutions.
  • Perform servicing and hardware modifications as necessary.
  • Operate the test cell utilizing a combination of automated test cycles and manual operations, progressing to complex calibration tasks with engineering support.
  • Serve as the primary point of quality control and validation for unit test data.
  • Take responsibility for the unit, equipment, and hardware within the test cell.
  • Engage with engineers, supervisors, and customers on a technical level.
  • Promote initiatives aimed at reducing waste and enhancing efficiency.
  • Exemplify the values and behaviors expected of UTAC staff at all times.

Qualifications

  • City and Guilds and/or a full apprenticeship, or an ONC/HNC or equivalent in Automotive Engineering.

Core Competencies

  • Strong automotive background, ideally within a test cell environment, though candidates from other automotive sectors will be considered.
  • Comprehensive understanding of engine fundamentals and related systems.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision following the completion of the probationary period.

Desirable Attributes

  • Experience with both gasoline and diesel testing in complex environments using various testing techniques and equipment (e.g., pressure and temperature instrumentation, emissions measurement).
  • Familiarity with AVL and ETAS test bed equipment and automation systems.
  • Ability to perform electrical wiring assemblies.
  • Experience with lithium-ion batteries, preferably in automotive applications.
  • Knowledge of high voltage electrical automotive connectivity techniques (up to 1000V DC).
  • Experience with test automation software (e.g., AVL PUMA, Horiba STARS), indicating software (e.g., AVL Indicom, ETAS INCA), and analysis software (e.g., AVL Concerto).
