Position Overview
Objective
We are seeking a Propulsion Test Technician to join our Propulsion Engine Test Centre. The successful candidate will be tasked with operating propulsion systems within a testbed environment, overseeing all related activities from setup to test cell configuration, maintenance, and execution of both automated and manual sequences. The technician's contributions will be pivotal in the successful execution of comprehensive customer test programs across various prototype units, ranging from downsized units emphasizing economy and emissions to high-output units focused on performance. The technician will receive support from the Engineering team.
Key Responsibilities
- Adhere to all health and safety and quality protocols.
- Assist in unit palletization, installation, and setup of instrumentation and test cell automation systems as directed by the Engineering team.
- Validate engine operation and associated fluid and boost conditioning systems within the test cell environment.
- Collaborate with the team to fulfill customer testing requirements for specific development programs.
- Identify and troubleshoot unit faults, both mechanical and electrical, in collaboration with the Engineering team to implement effective solutions.
- Perform servicing and hardware modifications as necessary.
- Operate the test cell using a combination of automated test cycles and manual operations, progressing to more complex calibration tasks with assistance from Engineering and Calibration teams.
- Serve as the first line of quality control and unit test data validation.
- Take ownership of the unit, equipment, and hardware within the test cell.
- Communicate effectively with supporting staff, engineers, supervisors, and customers on a technical level.
- Drive initiatives to minimize waste and enhance efficiency.
- Uphold the behavioral standards expected of UTAC staff at all times.
Required Qualifications
- City and Guilds and/or Full Apprenticeship, or ONC/HNC or equivalent in Automotive Engineering.
Core Competencies:
- Strong automotive background, preferably in a test cell environment, though candidates from other automotive fields will be considered.
- Comprehensive understanding of engine fundamentals and related systems.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision following the probationary period.
- Willingness to take responsibility for personal work and support colleagues.

Preferred Qualities:
- Experience with both gasoline and diesel testing, particularly in complex testing environments utilizing various techniques and equipment (pressure and temperature instrumentation, emissions measurement, etc.).
- Familiarity with AVL and ETAS test bed equipment and automation systems.
- Ability to perform electrical wiring assemblies.
- Experience with Lithium Ion Batteries (preferably in automotive applications).
- Knowledge of high voltage electrical automotive connectivity techniques (up to 1000V DC).
- Proficiency in test automation software (AVL PUMA and/or Horiba STARS), indicating software (AVL Indicom, ETAS INCA), and analysis software (AVL Concerto).
