Lead Energy Market Specialist
Overview of the Position
The electricity sector in Great Britain is experiencing a significant and essential evolution. In collaboration with industry stakeholders, we are committed to developing a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy system that will benefit future generations.
The Lead Energy Market Specialist is tasked with overseeing the Market Surveillance team, focusing on detecting and analyzing irregular activities within the Energy Balancing Markets.
You will collaborate with regulatory bodies, control room operations, market participants, and various departments to identify market challenges and assess them against established market regulations. Your role will involve scrutinizing extensive balancing market datasets and interpreting regulatory frameworks, including licence conditions, REMIT, and Grid Code, to conduct thorough investigations and propose actionable recommendations. Your insights will play a crucial role in supporting regulatory decisions, ultimately contributing to lower energy costs and aiding vulnerable energy consumers.
A strong commitment to process enhancement and a deep understanding of Energy Markets are essential. You will possess the organizational and communication skills necessary to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
This position offers flexibility in work arrangements, allowing for a combination of office and remote work.
About Our Organization
Our organization plays a pivotal role in addressing climate change by facilitating the transition of Great Britain's electricity system towards net-zero emissions. We currently manage the fastest decarbonizing electricity system globally, with aspirations for complete carbon neutrality in our operations by 2025. By 2035, our goal is to operate solely on clean, renewable energy.
Transitioning to the National Energy System Operator
In the near future, our organization will evolve into the National Energy System Operator (NESO). Previously known as the Future System Operator (FSO), NESO will serve as the independent entity responsible for the planning and operation of Great Britain's electricity and gas networks.
As NESO, we will enhance our existing roles and capabilities to meet the needs of the energy system and its users. Our new functions will enable us to analyze various energy vectors, including electricity, natural gas, and hydrogen, while considering the interdependencies among them.
The organization will operate as a public corporation with an independent Board of directors, ensuring complete operational autonomy from governmental and regulatory influences, as well as commercial interests. NESO will continue to be regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements, with a mandate to identify optimal solutions for system operations and planning in a sustainable, cost-effective, and secure manner for all stakeholders.
The urgency to act is paramount; your contributions will not only impact the lives of countless individuals in Great Britain but will also shape the future of energy consumption for generations.
Key Responsibilities
Detect potential violations of market regulations to assist in regulatory decision-making or suggest market modifications. Analyze data to comprehend the rationale behind actions taken in balancing markets and, when necessary, produce formal reports for regulatory bodies. Cultivate a collaborative environment within the Market Surveillance team, providing training and support to team members in grasping power markets and applicable regulations. Stay informed and adapt to evolving market structures, aiding the team in understanding wholesale, balancing, and ancillary service markets, as well as control room operations. Engage in the continuous enhancement of our analytical tools designed to identify patterns and trends from diverse datasets, improving our ability to detect market events.Candidate Profile
Our mission is critical, and we seek to recruit specialists in their respective fields. We are looking for candidates who possess:
A degree in a relevant discipline such as Economics, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, or Computer Science. A proven history of delivering analytical reports, working with data, and presenting complex analyses to diverse audiences. Expertise in power markets and/or power system operations. A solid understanding of the electricity market regulations governing market participants. Strong analytical skills with experience in tools such as Excel or Power BI for data-driven decision-making. Excellent communication and presentation abilities. The capability to interpret and comprehend technical and commercial market documentation. The ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team. Experience in stakeholder engagement, with the ability to present findings to regulatory bodies and internal and external stakeholders. Familiarity with data analysis tools such as VBA, Python, and/or SQL is preferred.Benefits
We offer a competitive salary range, commensurate with experience and expertise, along with performance-based bonuses, 26 days of annual leave, and a robust contributory pension scheme with a generous company match.
