Job Title: Head of Legal Service

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Head of Legal Service to lead our Legal Services team and support the council's service delivery portfolios.

About the Role

As Head of Legal Service, you will be responsible for managing a team of 24 legal professionals, including solicitors, trainees, legal apprentices, paralegals, and legal assistants. You will handle a technical legal caseload of complex, politically sensitive cases, providing direction and leadership to ensure services meet the Council's quality standards, performance targets, budgetary control, and legislative requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a team of legal professionals to deliver high-quality legal services
  • Handle a technical legal caseload of complex, politically sensitive cases
  • Provide direction and leadership to ensure services meet the Council's quality standards
  • Support the council's service delivery portfolios
  • Represent the Council at senior-level stakeholder events
  • Act as Deputy Monitoring Officer, advising on strategic legal issues
  • Deputise for the Director of Legal Services, including counselling Members
  • Collaborate with Democratic Services and Information Governance Managers
  • Manage the Legal Services budget and external legal advice
  • Promote customer-focused legal services and continuous improvement
Requirements

We are looking for a highly experienced and skilled legal professional with several years of post-qualification experience in your area(s) of practice. You should have in-depth knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures, as well as strong leadership and team management skills. Experience in coaching and mentoring would be ideal.
