Position Overview

The Department for Work and Pensions is seeking a Director of Physical Security Oversight.

As a key member of the leadership team, you will have the opportunity to significantly influence the management and development of Enterprise Security and Risk Management (ESRM) within the department, which serves approximately 90,000 employees across numerous locations in the UK.

The DWP is responsible for various welfare and pension policies, administering significant financial benefits to millions of claimants and customers.

In this role, you will guide the ESRM team in ensuring that the department operates within its defined security risk parameters by providing expert risk assessments and unbiased security assurance across the organization, particularly focusing on physical security measures.

This position is ideal for a forward-thinking leader. You will lead and nurture a dedicated team of around 20 specialists, inspiring them to align with your strategic vision and objectives.

You will possess the credibility and experience necessary to provide strategic advice and influence at the executive level, navigating the complexities of the Enterprise Security and Risk Management landscape.

Key Responsibilities

What will your daily responsibilities include?

  • Enhancing and managing the Physical Security Assurance operational framework, including establishing risk-based site classifications and prioritizing tasks to ensure comprehensive security assurance across the DWP estate.
  • Building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders who depend on our expertise in addressing complex security challenges.
  • Advising local and national security stakeholders/risk owners, providing evidence-based assurance reports with actionable recommendations for risk mitigation and improvement.
  • Leading and developing a geographically dispersed team, witnessing the immediate impact of your efforts as you assist site managers in safeguarding their assets and operational effectiveness.
  • Implementing continuous improvement initiatives and influencing strategic decisions related to physical security assurance.
  • Recognizing the critical role of human behavior in maintaining a secure environment.
  • Demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of Physical Security controls and their application in a multi-building context across a large estate.
  • Exhibiting experience in managing a large, dispersed team remotely.
  • Willingness to travel to various DWP locations, with occasional overnight stays as necessary.

Essential Qualifications

We are looking for a seasoned Security Risk professional and invite you to apply if you can demonstrate the following qualifications:

  • Possession of certifications such as CRISC or CISM, or equivalent experience showcasing a deep understanding of Governance, Risk & Compliance, and the effective integration of Physical Security with other security domains including Cyber, Personnel, Information, and Supply Chain in a comprehensive risk management framework.
  • Experience engaging with board-level governance, demonstrating the ability to influence strategic decision-making and articulate insights at the C-suite level in business-relevant terms.
  • Proven track record of operating within a large, geographically diverse organization, understanding the overarching security strategies, policies, and procedures necessary to protect its assets.
  • Prior experience leading a large, dispersed team to achieve success, delivering on challenging objectives and providing exceptional services within a Security Assurance context.
  • Ability to convey the significance of Security Risk as a vital business function across all organizational levels.
  • Exemplary relationship management skills, coupled with high standards of presentation and business writing capabilities.
