Primary Responsibilities

In your role as a SECamb 999 Emergency Call Handler, you will be responsible for gathering essential information from callers while providing reassurance and guidance, often in challenging situations. You will document patient details and their conditions in our system, categorizing the urgency of their needs to ensure they receive appropriate care, whether that be an emergency ambulance dispatch, a clinician's assessment over the phone, a referral to another care option, or self-care advice.

We offer comprehensive training in a supportive environment within our Emergency Call Centres.

Our Training Program Includes:

  • 9 weeks of full-time training
  • Full-time commitment required, even for part-time candidates
  • Mandatory attendance to obtain your Pathways license
  • 3 weeks of classroom training followed by 6 weeks of hands-on mentoring
  • Designed to ensure a smooth transition to independent call handling

About SECamb

As a 24/7 service, this position requires a flexible shift pattern, including early, late, night, and weekend shifts. Fixed rotas are established to maintain safe patient care. If you prefer to work exclusively nights, we can accommodate that as well.

Job Responsibilities

Role of an Emergency 999 Call Handler (Emergency Medical Advisor)

When a 999 call is made, it is directed to a call handler at one of our Emergency Operation Call Centres. These professionals are trained to utilize the NHS Pathways system to assist in various scenarios, from minor ailments to critical emergencies. Your support will range from providing life-saving guidance while an ambulance is en route to directing callers to more suitable services.

This position can be demanding and challenging, yet it is also highly rewarding. Candidates must possess a variety of skills to navigate stressful and emotional situations while demonstrating compassion and empathy to all callers.

Additional Information

Interview Process

The selection process will include an online psychometric assessment, multiple mini interviews, and a tour of the Emergency Operations Centre.

All successful candidates will be required to undergo an Enhanced DBS check for working with adults and children.

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE or Functional Skills level education with fundamental skills in Maths, English, and ICT, or evidence of using these skills in previous employment.

Desirable

  • Level 2 qualification in Customer Service or Health and Social Care.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in public communication.
  • Ability to engage with diverse individuals and build rapport.

Desirable

  • Experience in a computer-based role with strong IT skills.
