Job Overview

The Royal Marsden is seeking a dedicated General Assistant for our Catering division, focusing on kitchen preparation, dishwashing, and inventory management.

This is a full-time role, requiring 37.5 hours per week across 5 days out of 7.

Previous experience in a similar setting is advantageous.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities include the preparation of both raw and cooked meals, along with the assembly and distribution of cook-chill meals, sandwiches, and salads for our patients and dining facilities. Additionally, you will perform cleaning tasks relevant to the position and support the kitchen team in delivering meals to both patients and staff.

Detailed Responsibilities


• Prepare vegetables, sandwiches, cold desserts, and salads for both Restaurant and Patient Services as instructed by the Chef on duty.

• Assemble and distribute cook-chill meals for patients.

• Ensure compliance with food storage, preparation, and service temperature guidelines as per the Food Safety (Temperature Control) Act 1995, documenting all food temperatures.

• Participate in the daily cleaning of kitchen areas to uphold hygiene standards as per departmental cleaning schedules.

• Confirm that all necessary equipment is operational before service and properly shut down after use.

• Assist the chef de parties in the preparation, cooking, and serving of meals for patients and staff.

• Ensure that all required food items and accompaniments are ready for service as directed by the Chef in charge.

Flu Vaccination – Expectations for Staff

At The Royal Marsden, we care for an immune-compromised patient population, and it is crucial to protect them against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands in the UK, primarily during winter, and can lead to severe health issues.

The health and wellbeing of our staff and patients are paramount, and we expect all patient-facing staff to receive an annual flu vaccination, which is provided free of charge by the Trust.

The successful candidate will have access to vulnerable individuals during their duties, and as such, this position is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020.
