Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Health Care Support Worker to become a vital part of our innovative and committed Day Surgery Services team at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust.

The Day Surgery ward includes both an Admissions area and a Day Surgery Unit, operating Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 20:00. The successful candidate will play a key role in admitting and preparing patients for surgical procedures, ensuring compliance with local policies, and providing post-operative care.

Flexibility in working hours is essential to accommodate the needs of the service. Strong communication skills and a commitment to upholding and enhancing high standards of care are crucial. A friendly, patient-centered approach is essential for this rewarding position.


Previous Experience: While prior experience in a healthcare or Day Surgery environment is advantageous, it is not mandatory as comprehensive training will be provided.

As a member of our team, you will work under the supervision and guidance of a registered healthcare professional, delivering dignified, compassionate, and safe care to patients while ensuring meticulous documentation standards are upheld.

Your responsibilities will include assessing the care needs of patients with direct supervision, practicing in a holistic, non-judgmental, and empathetic manner that fosters social inclusion and respects individual choices and diversity.

You will collaborate with other healthcare and social care professionals, students, trainees, and external agencies, while also partnering with service users, their families, and caregivers.

Additionally, you will contribute to the development of practice within your clinical setting and adhere to Trust Policies, Procedures, and Guidelines, completing any necessary work-based training related to your role.

Key duties include performing tasks for patients aged 16 and above, such as venepuncture, cannulation, and ECGs, ensuring that you have received appropriate training or induction in accordance with Trust policies.

Essential Experience:

  • Experience working effectively within a team under appropriate supervision.
  • Experience engaging with a diverse range of individuals.

Desirable Experience:

  • Basic food handling knowledge.
  • Previous experience in a care environment or the NHS.

Qualifications:

  • Good numeracy and literacy skills.
  • Completion of a competency-based workbook or Care Certificate.
  • Equivalent relevant experience to vocational level 3.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in IT.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
