Disruption Control Physicist

We are seeking a highly skilled Disruption Control Physicist to join our team at the UK Atomic Energy Authority. As a key member of our research team, you will play a crucial role in advancing our understanding of plasma stability and disruption mitigation in fusion energy.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement disruption detection methods with high fidelity to enable real-time disruption avoidance.
  • Contribute to experiments on MAST-U to test disruption avoidance strategies for the STEP device.
  • Investigate and mitigate disruption consequences, including heat and EM loads, and runaway electrons.
  • Collaborate with international teams to advance our understanding of magnetic fusion.
  • Build a strong network of external collaborations to drive innovation and progress in the field.
Requirements:
  • PhD or equivalent experience in Physics or a related field.
  • Proficiency in programming languages, including C, FORTRAN, IDL, and Python.
  • Proven ability to conduct independent physics research and contribute to refereed journal articles.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with a strong ability to work collaboratively with scientists from around the world.
Desirable Requirements:
  • Knowledge of real-time control methods and experience with safety considerations.
  • Proven ability to analyze experimental and modeled data, with a strong understanding of error analysis and suitable tools.
