Overview: The emergence of satellite mega-constellations in low Earth orbit is creating unprecedented opportunities for comprehensive global observation of our planet. This position focuses on investigating the potential of utilizing mega-constellations to enhance our understanding of the solar wind – magnetosphere – ionosphere interactions, thereby contributing to advancements in space weather science and operational practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct innovative research aimed at leveraging satellite mega-constellations to significantly enhance existing capabilities in space weather monitoring.
- Develop and implement data assimilation techniques for magnetic field observations from mega-constellations, validating these methods against Imperial's global magnetospheric simulations.
- Apply findings to real-world measurements obtained from Eutelsat OneWeb's Gen1 constellation.
- Contribute to the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship project focused on utilizing mega-constellations for global space weather analysis.
Qualifications:
- A PhD in space physics or a closely related field, or equivalent research, industrial, or commercial experience.
- In-depth knowledge of the solar wind – magnetosphere – ionosphere interactions.
- Hands-on experience with a diverse range of methodologies, including satellite observations, computational simulations, and theoretical modeling.
