This position is a demanding, dynamic, and high-visibility role within the Chief Analyst's (CA) Office at DWP. The CA's Office is responsible for providing support and business management for the Central Analysis and Science Strategy (CASS) unit, Working Age Modelling & Forecasting (WAMForD), Analyst Resourcing and Capability (ARC) building, Data as Statistics (DaS), and the broader Analytical Community within DWP.

The Head of Business Support and Private Secretary will be instrumental in creating an environment that allows the Chief Analyst to concentrate on their primary objectives and fulfill their responsibilities effectively and efficiently.

Role Responsibilities

The successful candidate will lead the CA's Private Office and manage a diverse portfolio within the directorate's scope. You will oversee a variety of initiatives, ensuring the successful delivery of the Central Analysis and Science Directorate's (CASD) objectives while enabling the Director and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to prioritize their strategic goals.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the Private Office team to assist the Chief Analyst in achieving their objectives, priorities, long-term strategic planning, and daily operational needs, ensuring the wider team provides proactive, high-quality support and guidance.
  • Maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the Chief Analyst's priorities, reallocating resources and activities as necessary, anticipating challenges, and acting as a troubleshooter to mitigate risks.
  • Commissioning work and expert advice to facilitate timely decision-making, ensuring the Director and wider directorate receive appropriate guidance for evidence-based decision-making.
  • Reviewing and critically assessing strategic and technical advice to the Chief Analyst, enabling informed decisions on key issues within the directorate and department.
  • Building and nurturing strong relationships across the complex stakeholder landscape within DWP to identify potential issues early.
  • Supporting CASD and the broader analytical community, including 20 lead analyst areas, with general business management activities, such as strategic workforce planning and budget oversight.
  • Ensuring the efficient operation of the Chief Analyst's Private Office, including managing a small team, ensuring effective administration, and providing support for the Chief Analyst.
  • Acting as the secretariat for CASD SLT, Senior Analyst Leadership Team, and Analyst Heads of Professions.

Candidate Profile

Essential qualifications include:

  • Demonstrated experience in a Private Office, Secretariat, Analytical, or Governance role at a management level.
  • Exceptional organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively under pressure.
  • Proactive and flexible work style, with efficient time management skills.
  • Strong capability to manage upwards, ensuring effective execution of roles by the Director and Deputy Directors.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage and manage stakeholders and senior officials across DWP.
  • Ability to leverage data and insights to influence and inform senior leaders on a range of issues succinctly.
  • Proven ability to build trust-based, collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders across multi-organizational teams.
