The role of a Registered Nurse at East Cheshire Hospice is centered around delivering exceptional palliative care tailored to the needs of patients facing life-limiting conditions, as well as their families and caregivers. This position is integral to upholding the mission and values of East Cheshire Hospice.
Key Responsibilities

Job Title: Registered Nurse
Pay Band: 5
Reports to: Inpatient Unit Manager
2. Purpose of the Role
The primary objective of this position is to ensure the delivery of high-quality palliative care that addresses the comprehensive needs of patients and their families, in alignment with the standards set by East Cheshire Hospice.
3. Core Duties
Clinical Responsibilities:
- Provide professional nursing care directly to patients, ensuring their dignity, safety, and confidentiality are maintained at all times.
- Identify and address the nutritional and hydration requirements of patients, collaborating with catering personnel to facilitate appropriate meal provision.
- Uphold professional conduct standards and ensure that junior nursing staff understand their accountability as per the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) guidelines.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of policies and procedures, participating in regular reviews and audits as necessary.
- Collaborate effectively with the multi-disciplinary team to create a cohesive and planned approach to patient care.
- Maintain ongoing communication with patients, families, and caregivers to ensure their psychological, spiritual, and social needs are met.
- Oversee the management and storage of controlled substances, ensuring compliance with the Hospice's Medicines Management policy.
- Encourage a culture of reflective practice, where team members can discuss individual performance standards and learn from critical incidents.
- Engage in the advancement of professional nursing practices, sharing knowledge and experiences to enhance service delivery.
- Ensure the accuracy and clarity of patient care documentation.
- Adhere to the safeguarding policies of East Cheshire Hospice, ensuring the protection of patients, staff, and volunteers from harm.
Management and Leadership Duties:
- Act as a deputy in the absence of the Sister, ensuring consistent and high-quality patient support services.
- Assist in the orientation and training of new or less experienced staff and volunteers.
- Facilitate effective communication within the team through both formal and informal channels.
- Address and resolve specific managerial challenges that may arise during shifts, reporting issues to the appropriate supervisory staff.
- Take responsibility for designated administrative tasks as assigned by senior management.
- Promote a safe and healthy work environment by ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.
- Document and report all incidents and accidents to the appropriate supervisory personnel.
Education and Quality Assurance Duties:
- Contribute to the preparation of Care Quality Commission assessments and participate in inspections as required.
- Demonstrate a commitment to evidence-based practice and clinical excellence.
- Participate in educational programs and share new knowledge with colleagues and students.
- Support the development of East Cheshire Hospice as a center of excellence through personal development initiatives.
- Assist in investigating complaints related to patient care in collaboration with senior management.
- Attend mandatory training sessions as directed by management.
Infection Control
All staff members are responsible for preventing and managing infections, which is a critical component of patient safety. Compliance with infection control protocols is essential, and staff are expected to maintain high standards of hygiene.
Qualifications and Skills
Essential:
- Registered Nurse qualification.
- Experience in a similar healthcare environment.
- Excellent time management and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Commitment to professional development and quality standards.
Desirable:
- Post-registration qualification in Palliative Care.
- Experience in delivering holistic care and mentoring staff.
