About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Category Manager to join our team at Halfords Autocentres. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for driving sales, profit, and market share growth within our defined product categories.

Key Responsibilities
  • Customer-Centric Approach: Ensure that customer needs are at the forefront of all decision-making processes, working closely with marketing, customer, digital, and field teams to deliver exceptional customer experiences.
  • Category Insights: Develop a deep understanding of each sub-product group, including market size, share, and trends, competitor offerings, and supply dynamics.
  • Strategic Planning: Create and execute a comprehensive category plan that addresses opportunities to increase sales, profit, and market share.
  • Network Development: Establish and maintain internal and external networks to ensure that category plans receive 360-degree feedback.
  • Product Development: Identify new products and services relevant to the category and bring them to market effectively.
  • Performance Monitoring: Continuously monitor and manage trading performance across categories, navigating key digital metrics and collaborating with the Digital team to optimize them profitably.
  • Risk Management: Update the business on any risks to targets and present comprehensive recovery plans.
  • Business Acumen: Develop a thorough understanding of all business levers to ensure fast and effective decision-making to optimize trading performance.
  • Category Promotions: Design and implement compelling category promotional and price plans in collaboration with the commercial planning team and channel owners.
  • Competitive Benchmarking: Regularly benchmark price position to optimize price elasticity.
  • Capacity Utilization: Ensure that all plans drive customer numbers that match capacity, understanding the relationship between capacity and demand, and pulling all levers to maximize utilization.
  • Process Optimization: Fully understand end-to-end processes across categories, identifying areas of opportunity and implementing activity, development, training, or communication to address these.
  • Supplier Management: Define supplier selection policy within the category, rationalize the supplier base where appropriate to secure additional value, measure, and drive compliance within the network.
  • Supplier Trading Agreements: Implement supplier trading agreements, ensuring suppliers conform to procurement policies such as ESG, CSR, and Ethical Trading.
  • Price Benchmarking: Conduct regular price benchmarking or tenders to ensure the business secures best-cost prices.

  • Commercial Acumen: High commercial acumen, analytical, and financially robust, with a keen eye for cash flow and working capital management.
  • Data Analysis: Able to understand, interpret, challenge, and build actionable insight from complex data sets.
  • Results-Driven: Dynamic and results-driven individual with high levels of energy and commitment to delivering business objectives.
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit: Hands-on, entrepreneurial approach, able to respond to fast-moving market conditions, fail fast, and learn quickly.
  • Collaboration: Positive attitude with a can-do spirit and ability to make things happen, with strong stakeholder management and cross-functional expertise.
  • Leadership: Ability to manage direct reports and inspire all colleagues around them.
  • Communication: Effective communicator with outstanding presentation skills and gravitas, articulate and persuasive, able to build strong relationships across the business at all levels.
  • Industry Knowledge: Previous knowledge of the automotive aftermarket is preferable but not compulsory.
