Position Overview

Department of Infection - Virology

Role: Medical Laboratory Assistant – Band 3

Full Time: 37.5 hours per week.

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership (ESEL) is committed to delivering a high-quality, cost-efficient service while ensuring the long-term viability of pathology services in the region.

As a collaborative entity, we are jointly operated by Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. Our organization functions independently, supported by Barts Health NHS Trust, with governance shared equally among the three trusts. We are among the largest pathology service providers within the NHS, merging the expertise of each trust into a unified entity focused on pathology delivery.

A significant transformation initiative is underway to establish a cohesive, integrated pathology network. Our envisioned 'hub and spoke' operational framework is centered at The Royal London Hospital, connecting essential service laboratories across partner hospitals.

The Virology Department is housed in a state-of-the-art facility adjacent to The Royal London Hospital, employing approximately 35 staff members and processing over 900,000 tests annually. We offer a comprehensive clinical and diagnostic Virology service, utilizing a full spectrum of methodologies, including automated serology and molecular diagnostics. Our laboratory is UKAS accredited and recognized as a HCPC / IBMS training facility.

We take pride in our advanced platforms and innovative methodologies. Our diverse range of technologies and techniques fosters an environment that encourages new ideas and developments. We seek motivated individuals who are eager to meet the challenges posed by our varied patient demographic and who are interested in engaging in research, training, quality assurance, and validation to enhance their professional experience.

Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will primarily operate from The Royal London Hospital but may occasionally be required to work at other affiliated sites. Candidates should possess experience in a Virology Laboratory, with responsibilities that include operating and maintaining laboratory analyzers. Efficiency, attention to detail, and teamwork are essential attributes for this role.

The position requires participation in a late and weekend shift rotation.
