Competence Development Specialist

Freightliner Group is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Competence Development Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our rail operations team, you will be responsible for ensuring the highest standards of competence and development within our UK rail operations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver high-quality driver assessments, aligning with business requirements.
  • Provide timely training and continuous development to ensure all drivers meet necessary competencies and standards.
  • Ensure the assessment plan is delivered within strict timescales, focusing on continuous improvement.
  • Manage records related to the competence assessment process.
  • Train and brief driver instructors and mentor drivers to perform their roles effectively.
  • Retain personal train driving competencies and comply with internal and external standards.
  • Maintain competence records, certification, and route knowledge within EDS, ensuring all staff are within competence.
  • Investigate incidents using Root Cause Analysis and interpret Qtron data recorder information.
Requirements:
  • Experience of managing people within a rail operational environment.
  • Experience of working with unions at local level.
  • Must live within 60 minutes of the Rugby depot.
Competencies / Qualifications:
  • Railway Operations Knowledge: Thorough understanding of safe and efficient railway operations, including operating instructions, policies, procedures, rule book, and railway standards.
  • Freight Experience: Previous freight experience is preferable but not essential.
  • Class 66 Traction Competence: Preferred.
  • Route Knowledge: Competent driver route knowledge in the areas of Rugby and Bedford station.
  • Practical Experience: At least 5 years' recent practical experience driving trains; competent and medically capable of driving trains.
  • Training & Assessing Qualifications: Industry-standard training qualifications and Level 3 NVQ Assessing & Instructing.
  • IT Proficiency: Good knowledge of Microsoft packages and ability to use and interpret data from job-related software (e.g., TOPS/ERIC/Qtron).
  • Report Writing: Ability to write concise, factual-based reports with clear recommendations based on factual evidence.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Diligent, self-motivated, with strong interpersonal and effective people management skills.
  • Driving Licence: Hold a full UK driving licence.
