Job Summary

The Practice Nurse - Clinical Expert will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the success of Southview Medical Practice. This position requires a registered general nurse with a strong background in clinical expertise, particularly in diabetes, CHD, asthma, and COPD management.

Main Responsibilities
  • Work alongside healthcare assistants to develop their skills and provide guidance on clinical procedures.
  • Support the practice in achieving quality indicators and targets of the GMS contract and relevant National Service Frameworks.
  • Perform basic nursing duties, including venepuncture, ECG, wound care, and management of dressing techniques.
  • Undertake male, female, and family planning assessments, provide advice, and refer patients appropriately.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of practice disease registers and provide lifestyle advice to patients.
  • Provide an adult and childhood immunization service, working to Patient Group Directions.
  • Deliver travel health advice and recognize signs of child abuse, family violence, vulnerable adults, substance abuse, addictive behaviors, suicidal tendencies, and local referral procedures.
  • Apply infection control measures and undertake first aid and management of emergencies, burns, hemorrhage, hypo/hyperglycemic emergencies, and asthma attacks.
  • Undertake annual training and demonstrate competency in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques.
Leadership and Communication
  • Provide professional and managerial support to healthcare assistants and review and monitor patients within primary care.
  • Offer guidance and support to healthcare assistants to improve standards of care.
  • Participate in chronic disease management clinics within the practice, provide practical assistance, and professional advice to achieve minimum standards of care.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and advise and support other members of the team towards common objectives.
Education and Training
  • Provide professional advice and support to healthcare professionals within the primary healthcare team.
  • Participate in training and facilitation of other practice nurses and healthcare assistants.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance for healthcare assistants.
  • Maintain a level of expertise in specific chronic disease management and other pertinent areas of healthcare.
  • Advise members of the public on health promotion, education, prevention, and protection.
  • Seek out new knowledge of nursing and healthcare by reading, enquiring, and participating in continuous education programs.

  • Registered general nurse.
  • Evidence of ongoing post-basic education at diploma or degree level.
  • Competent in basic nursing duties required for the post.
  • Diploma or degree-level training in diabetes, CHD, asthma, and COPD.
  • Willingness to undertake further training and personal development as identified by the practice.
