Job Summary

The Surgical Care Practitioner will work closely with medical teams within the General Surgery Directorate, providing support to the Urology service. The post holder will be based on wards, in the operating theatre, and in outpatient clinics, implementing evidence-based patient-focused care and providing specialist knowledge and assistance to nursing and junior medical staff.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Running clinics, seeing pre-operative patients, and listing them for surgical procedures, following additional training and local guidelines.
  2. Formulating individualized management and treatment plans, using clinical reasoning, experience, and evidence-based practice.
  3. Understanding and interpreting clinical policies to inform practice, taking responsibility for pursuing actions to progress patients along the most appropriate clinical pathway.
  4. Developing protocols for specialist areas, impacting other disciplines.
  5. Pre-operative assessment, clinical examination, and enhanced recovery education, as directed by the surgical team.
  6. Arranging pre and post-operative investigations, enhancing patient safety and facilitating patient-centered care.
  7. The consent process, following GMC and local trust guidelines, with an understanding of the Mental Capacity Act.
  8. Liaising with medical, theatre, ward, and clerical staff on relevant issues, supporting coherent service provision.

Person Specification

Essential qualifications include a Registered Nurse (Level 1) and a postgraduate diploma/degree in a surgical field. Evidence of ongoing professional development, clinical audit, and standard setting is also required.
