The Surgical Care Practitioner will work closely with medical teams within the General Surgery Directorate, providing support to the Urology service. The post holder will be responsible for implementing evidence-based, patient-focused care and providing specialist knowledge, assistance, and support for nursing and junior medical staff in the field of Urology.
Main Duties- Running and holding clinics, seeing specific pre-operative patients and listing them for surgical procedures following additional training appropriate to local guidelines and requirements.
- Formulating individualised management and treatment plans, using clinical reasoning, experience, and evidence-based practice to formulate a highly specialised programme of care.
- Understanding and interpreting broad clinical policies to inform clinical practice, taking responsibility for pursuing actions to progress patients along the most appropriate clinical pathway.
- Developing protocols for specialist areas that may impact on other disciplines.
- Pre-operative assessment processes, including clinical examination and enhanced recovery education as directed by the surgical team.
- Arranging appropriate pre and post-operative investigations as part of the multidisciplinary team to enhance patient safety, facilitate patient-centred care, and contribute to the smooth running of operating lists.
- The consent process, following guidelines from the GMC and local trust or healthcare provider, with an understanding of the principles of the Mental Capacity Act regarding consent.
- Liaising with medical, theatre, ward, and clerical staff on relevant issues, including theatre lists, to support coherent service provision.
