Head of Student Mental Health and Wellbeing

To lead and further develop University College Birmingham's professional and specialist student mental health, wellbeing, and counselling service, ensuring it is accessible to all students and remains agile and responsive to the internal and external environment.
To manage and support a team of mental health and wellbeing and counselling professionals and ensure that the service is compliant with all relevant legislation and guidelines.
Main Duties & Responsibilities:- Develop and deliver a broad range of support initiatives to maximise engagement, with a focus on prevention and early intervention.
- Develop policies, strategies, and operating procedures that are in line and compliant with all relevant institutional, professional, legislative, and regulatory requirements relating to mental health and counselling.
- Provide 1-1, face-to-face, and remote brief therapy to students seeking wellbeing support and/or counselling, working to the relevant professional guidelines.
- Promote institutional awareness of mental health and counselling issues and services through connected communications.
- Assess and respond to mental health-related incidents and crises reported by members of Student Services and Wellbeing and the wider institution.
- Be the senior operational point of contact for students with issues relating to mental health and provide appropriate support to teams as necessary.
- Work closely with academic and professional services staff to ensure an appropriate, agile, and effective approach to managing demand for student mental health support.
- Ensure that adequate and appropriate clinical supervision arrangements are in place for members of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Team.
- Support the implementation of the University Mental Health Charter and any other relevant project work.
- Manage the people and financial resources of the team, ensuring they are managed appropriately and in line with agreed headcount and budgets.
- Maintain and enhance the wellbeing and counselling case management system, ensuring compliance with BACP/UKCP guidelines and the GDPR.
To be successful in this role, you will need to have:
- Extensive experience in mental health and wellbeing services, preferably in a higher education setting.
- Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and support a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, staff, and external partners.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, guidelines, and best practices in mental health and wellbeing.
- Ability to work flexibly and respond to critical incidents as required.
