We are pleased to announce an opportunity to join our Driver Management Team as a Driver Manager. In this pivotal role, you will maintain exemplary standards in operational execution. Leveraging your extensive experience as a mainline train driver, you will ensure the proficiency of your driver team through comprehensive assessments, proactive enhancement strategies, and the effective use of the competency management system.

Your responsibilities will include supporting the safe onboarding of new drivers, as well as the introduction of new routes, traction, and equipment. Collaborating closely with Operations Standards, Network Rail, and staff representatives, you will strive to implement strategies aimed at enhancing operational safety performance and continuously developing driver skills and capabilities.

Additionally, you will conduct thorough investigations into operational and occupational safety incidents, focusing on identifying root causes and implementing corrective measures. Utilizing your expertise as an operational practitioner, you will partner with various teams within Virgin Trains and Network Rail to design and execute initiatives that enhance train service performance and resilience.

This role represents a significant opportunity in operational management, allowing you to contribute to the advancement of a robust, safe, and reliable railway.

To excel in this position, you should possess:

  • A minimum of 3 years of current UK mainline competence as a train driver
  • In-depth knowledge of railway routes, infrastructure, and rolling stock
  • Understanding of competency assessment techniques and operational risk management
  • Basic familiarity with HR processes and practices
  • Proficiency in IT systems, including Microsoft Office applications, TRUST, Bugle, and OTDR analysis
  • A coaching leadership style complemented by strong interpersonal skills
  • The ability to make informed decisions based on factual data and excellent listening skills
  • Experience in leading teams and managing both personnel and processes
