Job Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Clinical Specialist Psychologist to join our Department of Haematology at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team providing specialist care to adults with sickle cell disease and thalassaemia. The postholder will work closely with consultant haematologists, specialist nurses, a social worker, junior doctors, and a Band 7 practitioner psychologist to provide inpatient, outpatient, and day unit services.

The centre is part of the South Thames Sickle and Thalassaemia Network and patients are referred for tertiary care from across the region. Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant for adults with sickle cell disease has recently been commissioned at King's, offering the postholder the opportunity to be involved in this exciting development.

Main Duties
  1. Specialist Psychology Service: Provide specialist assessment, treatment, planning, implementation, and monitoring of outcomes for adults with sickle cell disease or thalassaemia, focusing on psychological issues that impact symptoms, adherence to treatment plans, and overall well-being.
  2. Operational Line Management: Provide operational line management and clinical supervision to the Band 7 psychologist.
  3. Autonomous Professional: Work as an autonomous professional within BPS and HCPC guidelines and codes of conduct, taking responsibility for own work, including treatment and discharge decisions, with support from clinical supervisor.
Person Specification
  • Qualifications: Entry-level qualification in Applied Psychology (professional Doctorate, or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level additional training) accepted by the HCPC for professional registration.
  • Additional Training: Additional training in a specialised area of psychological practice through formal post-qualification training (PG Diploma or equivalent), or a combination of specialist short courses, or an evidenced portfolio of supervised practice-based learning in a specialist area of clinical practice, assessed by an experienced clinical supervisor to be of equal level to a Postgraduate Diploma.
  • Completed Training: Completed training course in clinical supervision.
  • Professional Registration: Registered with the HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist, and evidence of continuing professional development as required by the HCPC.
Knowledge and Experience
  • Experience with Medical Conditions: Evidence of having worked with people with medical conditions as a clinical specialist under supervision.
  • Specialist Psychological Assessment: Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients with a range of complex psychological and physical health needs.
  • Supervising Assistant Psychologists: Experience of supervising assistant and trainee psychologists having completed the relevant training.
  • Legislation and Knowledge: Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health issues, child and adult protection, and equalities.
  • Research Methodology: Doctoral level knowledge of psychological research methodology and complex statistical analysis.
  • Specialised Psychological Assessments: Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological assessments and interventions, including for those living with complex medical conditions.
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: Experience in the provision of cognitive behavioural therapy and/or systemic approaches to therapy.
  • Neuropsychological Assessments: Experience of undertaking and interpreting neuropsychological assessments and writing reports based on the results.
  • Health Psychology: An understanding of models of health psychology in addition to models of psychopathology.
