Position Overview

We are seeking dedicated and compassionate Nurses to become integral members of our Ophthalmic Medical Retina team.

The selected candidate will undergo a thorough orientation program, with comprehensive training in Ophthalmic practices provided.

The ideal candidate will exhibit a thorough holistic evaluation of patients, employing a range of advanced clinical competencies while serving as a role model in accordance with the Ophthalmic practitioner standards.

You will be responsible for assessing and identifying specific symptoms within your professional scope. You will provide guidance to medical and nursing personnel and/or prescribe medications based on patient needs, documenting in medical records and reassessing as necessary. You will assist in the clean room and manage patient admissions and discharges, ensuring they receive adequate information to support their care post-departure.

This role primarily focuses on enhancing the medical retina service, collaborating with Ophthalmic practitioners and Medical Retina Consultants to facilitate effective service delivery in a clinical environment.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time position, with working hours from Monday to Saturday, 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM (No night shifts).

Key Responsibilities

Our Medical Retina service caters to over 60,000 patients annually as a sub-specialty within Ophthalmology, contributing to the overall 180,000 patients treated each year.

We offer intravitreal injections (outpatient procedures), in-person clinics, virtual consultations, and training. The team is led by three consultants alongside a comprehensive team of Ophthalmic practitioners and Advanced Optometrist Practitioners.

You will provide assistance in the clean room, clinics, and other nursing-related tasks, working across various settings to deliver Medical Retina Services.

The bustling Ophthalmology department includes an ambulatory Day Case Unit that provides pre- and post-operative care to over 60 patients daily, two extensive outpatient clinics, Orthoptics, Optometry, and an Emergency Eye department, offering care and treatments for a wide array of Ophthalmic conditions.

The Ophthalmology team provides a complete range of specialized services to ensure a timely, safe, and effective patient journey.

Job Responsibilities

  • Operate within the financial parameters allocated to your specialty, collaborating with the line manager, Ophthalmic practitioners, Service Manager, and General Manager.
  • Encourage enhancements in quality and clinical effectiveness while adhering to resource limitations.
  • Conduct relevant clinics for your service to meet performance benchmarks within the specialty.
  • Serve as a positive role model by providing effective professional leadership in relevant clinical areas and demonstrating competent and accountable clinical practice.
  • Act as an advisor/educator and role model for less experienced doctors, nurses, and therapists (MDT) to ensure appropriate care is planned, implemented, and evaluated.
  • Be accountable for your professional practice and development, ensuring compliance with the NMC and the Code of Professional Conduct or other relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Support junior staff in achieving the same standards.
  • Facilitate the supervision of post-registration health professionals, students, and all learners wishing to expand their knowledge in your specialty.
  • Participate in cross-site collaboration to deliver equitable care for all patients within your specialty, regardless of the hospital site.
  • Oversee Advanced HCA staff within the medical retina team.
  • Provide Ophthalmic photography services for Medical Retina and the Ophthalmic service.
  • Assist in the clean room, supporting Ophthalmic practitioners, Consultants, and AOP in delivering outpatient procedure lists.
  • Manage patient admissions and discharges.
