Position Overview
What is the Volunteer to Career (VtC) initiative?
The North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust collaborates with Inspira, a leading organization in employability, to offer the Volunteer to Career Programme. This program is designed to tackle workforce shortages in the healthcare sector by motivating volunteers to explore career opportunities in Health and Social Care.
Eligibility Criteria for the VtC Programme
The VtC initiative welcomes individuals interested in pursuing a career in Health and Social Care. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, possess the right to work in the UK, and be prepared to undergo recruitment checks and training. A commitment of a minimum of 60 hours over at least 7 months is required.
Role Purpose
As a ward volunteer, you will provide companionship and support to patients, many of whom may be hospitalized for extended periods. Your role will involve facilitating various activities for patients, such as engaging in board games, reading, or simply conversing.
Main Responsibilities
Key Tasks Associated with this Role:
- Assist the Nutrition Coordinator in ensuring that each patient receives the correct meal and has everything they need during mealtime.
- Support patients with physical feeding and drinking when necessary.
- Enhance patient experience by offering a warm welcome, emotional support, and reassurance to patients and their families.
- Provide assistance to Healthcare Assistants and Nurses by replenishing drinks and spending time with patients.
- Run errands for patients, such as purchasing newspapers, magazines, or snacks as needed.
- Help prepare patients for meals and assist with feeding when required.
- Assist in serving meals and managing food presentation.
- Support with cutting food and opening packaging.
- Collect and tidy up after meal service.
- Engage with patients through conversation, reading, or playing games like dominoes.
