We are seeking a Technical Manager to join our team on a Joint Venture Surfacing Framework contract. This position involves overseeing a large-scale infrastructure project, focusing on optimizing technical elements to ensure timely and budget-compliant delivery. The role is based in a region that encompasses various surrounding areas.

Key Responsibilities

The Technical Manager will possess extensive expertise in asphalt, concrete, surfacing, and paving technologies, leading the team to successfully execute this strategic project, which is vital for operational and business advancement. You will serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME), ensuring that technological operations run safely, deliver exceptional customer service, and drive efficiency improvements throughout the project lifecycle. Your role will encompass managing all technical staff from project inception to completion, requiring strong problem-solving abilities, innovation, and a commitment to achieving high technical performance.

As the Technical Manager, you will be well-versed in all technical construction methodologies and procedures, coordinating a diverse team of professionals to achieve optimal results. The ideal candidate will demonstrate analytical thinking and exceptional organizational skills. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrating a proven track record in a successful technical project or program delivery team, showcasing extensive knowledge of asphalt, concrete, paving, and surfacing technologies within multi-million-pound projects.
  • Overseeing the technological aspects of the project roadmap, proactively identifying potential issues and employing problem-solving techniques to navigate challenges and meet critical milestones.
  • Managing and directing all testing processes in accordance with required standards and accreditations.
  • Providing guidance and support to the broader Project Delivery Team regarding surfacing technology, ensuring that all objectives and targets are met.
  • Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, business policies, and legal requirements for both employees and contractors.
  • Facilitating effective communication with colleagues, management, and contractors to ensure timely task execution, employing tact and diplomacy in challenging situations.
  • Assisting the Joint Venture in recovering costs related to technological issues that may arise during the project.

Key Stakeholders: Tarmac & Joint Venture Management Team, Quality Management Team, Project Management Team, Area Operations Managers, Contractors, Site Management, Supply Chain Operations.

Applicants must hold a valid UK manual driving license with no more than six penalty points.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will play a crucial role in shaping our organizational culture. You will have experience as a Technical Manager within the infrastructure, construction, highways, or surfacing sectors, with a solid understanding of asphalt, concrete, paving, and surfacing technologies. Knowledge of road or highway surfacing will be highly advantageous.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Desirable: A degree or HNC/HND in a relevant discipline, which would significantly contribute to your success in this role.
  • Desirable: Experience in technological management on multi-million-pound operational, construction, or heavy engineering projects.
  • Ability to challenge team members and hold them accountable for task completion and quality.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Strong communication skills, coupled with a positive, proactive attitude towards colleagues and external partners.
