Job Title: Senior Counselling Psychologist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Counselling Psychologist to join our team at the Ministry of Justice. As a Senior Counselling Psychologist, you will play a key role in the development and delivery of psychology services in our Youth Custody Service.

About the Role

This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires a high level of expertise and experience in counselling psychology. You will be responsible for establishing agreements with universities and appointing, coordinating, managing, and supervising trainee counselling psychologist placements at our sites.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review cases and reconsider professional advice given by other psychologists on the potential release of serious prisoners.
  • Conduct full case reviews on difficult cases and offer authoritative advice on next steps relating to sentence plan.
  • Specialise in delivery of psychology services in settings such as therapeutic community wings.
  • Lead and supervise group sessions.
  • Offer professional opinion to multi-functional teams conducting offender reports.
  • Develop and implement strategies for sex offender or indeterminate sentence prisoner assessment and intervention.
  • Deliver and supervise the delivery of complex programmes.
  • Provide consultancy support to colleagues.
  • Conduct relevant research and data analysis.
  • Act as a professional witness in parole board hearings and other formal settings.
  • Manage and provide professional supervision to trainee forensic psychology staff.
  • Provide supervision, training, mentoring, and support to trainee psychologists and other staff.
  • Ensure staff are developed in accordance with key competencies and gateways.
  • Lead on risk assessment and resulting risk management of complex, vulnerable, or high-risk prisoners.
  • Contribute to other offender management processes.
  • Provide consultancy role to wider team on specialist activity.
  • Manage own Continued Professional Development (CPD) requirements.
  • Provide a psychological contribution to the work of areas of the regime.
  • Provide psychological reports for life sentence prisoners.
Requirements
  • HCPC Registration as a Counselling Psychologist.
  • Chartered with the BPS with eligibility as a supervisor.
  • Experience of working with adolescents involved in offending is desirable.
