Senior Speech and Language Therapist

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled Speech and Language Therapist to join our team at Whittington Health NHS Trust. As a Senior Speech and Language Therapist, you will be responsible for providing a comprehensive and highly specialist service to inpatients throughout the hospital with swallowing and communication disorders.
Main Duties of the JobThe post holder will be an autonomous practitioner and will be responsible for managing and prioritizing a caseload of inpatients presenting with a wide range of swallowing and communication disorders, including those resulting from neurological disorders, respiratory conditions, and tracheostomies.
Key Responsibilities- Lead on patients with complex neurological disorders within the hospital
- Provide senior support for the respiratory caseload
- Contribute to the management of complex patients throughout the hospital
- Develop and deliver highly specialist training to a range of audiences
- Work closely with colleagues in other specialist hospitals and units to ensure common care pathways are established and effective transfer of information is maintained
The ideal candidate will have a BSc in Speech Pathology or equivalent, and will be a registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT). They will also have a successful completion of advanced practitioner postgraduate study relevant to the field, and will have experience working at a highly specialist level with adults with acquired swallowing and communication disorders across a range of aetiologies.

- Experience working at a highly specialist level with adults with acquired swallowing and communication disorders across a range of aetiologies
- Experience working at a specialist level in neurorehabilitation, respiratory, and general acute settings
- Make accurate differential diagnosis of communication and swallowing disorders in a range of populations
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate and sensitive information
- Of a highly specialist range of assessment tools and procedures to evaluate language and communication skills within a broad range of patient populations (including neurorehabilitation)
- Of the key characteristics leading to a highly specialist differential diagnosis around swallowing and communication disorders stemming from a range of aetiologies
- Of selecting, setting, and evaluating highly specialist treatment goals
- Of a highly specialist range of therapeutic interventions relevant to neurological and respiratory conditions, demonstrating the evidence base for these approaches
- The application of highly specialist knowledge of local cultural, linguistic, and demographic factors to the management of swallowing and communication disorders across a range of complex presentations
- Detailed knowledge of multi-disciplinary team approaches
- Mentoring, advising, supporting, line managing, and clinically supervising less experienced SLTs and support staff
- Good understanding of clinical governance principles
- Development and implementation of short-term clinically based projects
- Advanced approaches to support clients and carers with challenging behaviour, mental health needs, or in high levels of distress
