About the Role

An exciting opportunity has emerged for a dedicated registered nurse to become a vital part of the leadership team at George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust, focusing on the care of patients undergoing treatment for oncology and haematology.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Assist the Unit Manager in overseeing a team of nursing professionals, ensuring the delivery and maintenance of exceptional nursing standards for patients receiving anti-cancer therapies.
  • Take charge of the daily operations of the Oncology and Haematology Unit.
  • Lead specific areas of clinical practice as assigned by the Unit Manager and Lead Chemotherapy Nurse.
  • Act as a deputy for the Unit Manager during their absence.
  • Manage the preceptorship of newly qualified nurses, returning staff, and mentor nursing students and healthcare support workers.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality nursing care independently, grounded in evidence-based practice.
  • Conduct thorough and systematic nursing assessments of patients' physical, social, and spiritual needs.
  • Promote the health and well-being of patients under your care.
  • Monitor and influence the standards of patient care delivery in line with best practices and operational guidelines.
  • Work within NMC Guidelines and Trust Policies, recognizing personal competencies and limitations.
  • Foster positive working relationships within the nursing team, offering appropriate guidance and support.
  • Lead a nursing team to manage patient care throughout shifts.
  • Facilitate sensitive communication between clinicians and patients, including delivering difficult news.
  • Administer and coordinate care for oncology and haematology patients, including procedures such as venepuncture and management of central venous access devices.
  • Provide psychological and physiological support to patients experiencing treatment-related challenges.

Managerial Responsibilities

  • Participate in the recruitment and selection of nursing staff.
  • Plan staffing levels and skill mix effectively.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the Trust's Nursing Strategy.
  • Manage unit resources efficiently.

Professional Development

  • Support the Unit Manager in addressing complaints and enhancing service quality.
  • Provide expert advice to nursing staff within the specialty.
  • Ensure effective orientation and mentorship programs for new staff.
  • Encourage continuous professional development and maintain up-to-date nursing practices.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Registered General Nurse (RGN)
  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant specialty or commitment to pursue one
  • Degree or equivalent experience
  • Two years of experience at Band 5 or equivalent in a relevant specialty
  • Experience in Oncology/Haematology/Chemotherapy
  • Ability to lead a team

Desirable:

  • Experience in research management
  • Experience in audit and resource management
