Behaviour Mentor Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated Behaviour Mentor to work in primary schools across Derby, providing vital support to pupils who need help with their behaviour and emotional development.

The Role:

As a Behaviour Mentor, you will work directly with children displaying challenging behaviours, offering both 1:1 and group support. You will play a key role in helping students overcome barriers to learning, promoting positive behaviour, and encouraging emotional well-being in a nurturing and structured environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 and small group mentoring for children with behavioural difficulties.
  • Develop and implement behaviour management strategies in collaboration with teachers and SENCOs.
  • Act as a positive role model, promoting good behaviour and reinforcing school values.
  • Help de-escalate challenging situations with a calm, solution-focused approach.

What We're Looking For:

We are seeking an experienced Behaviour Mentor with a solid background in working with primary-aged children who exhibit challenging behaviour. The ideal candidate will be patient, empathetic, and proactive in finding creative solutions to support children's needs.

Key Requirements:

  • Relevant Qualifications: A minimum of a Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification or related fields such as Youth Work, Psychology, or Counselling.
  • Experience: Proven experience working with children in a school or similar setting, focusing on behaviour management or pastoral support.
  • Behaviour Management: Strong experience in handling challenging behaviour, with the ability to implement effective strategies to support students in improving their conduct.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills to engage with pupils, staff, and parents, creating positive relationships.
  • SEN Experience: Understanding of Special Educational Needs (SEN), particularly in supporting children with ADHD, Autism, or Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (EBD).
  • Patience & Resilience: Ability to stay calm under pressure and manage challenging behaviour with a positive and proactive attitude.
  • Team Player: Experience working as part of a team to support behaviour management strategies consistently across the school.
  • Safeguarding Knowledge: Good understanding of safeguarding and child protection policies.
  • Enhanced DBS: A current Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to apply for one).

What We Offer:

  • Flexibility: Work in a variety of primary schools across Derby, choosing a schedule that suits your lifestyle.
  • Competitive Pay: We offer competitive rates based on your skills and experience.
  • Professional Development: Access to CPD opportunities to enhance your skills in behaviour management and emotional support.
  • Ongoing Support: Join a supportive community of education professionals with access to dedicated recruitment consultants who understand your needs.
