Job Title: Animal Health Monitoring Scientist

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our team in the Science Directorate. As an Animal Health Monitoring Scientist, you will be responsible for providing technical, scientific, and laboratory support to our teams, ensuring the smooth and safe running of biocontainment facilities and preparation areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and provide support to Biological Archive audits, consolidation, and discards of diagnostic/research samples in ultra-low temperature freezers.
  • Maintain paper and electronic records, including data entry and recording of results using Microsoft computer-based sample management systems.
  • Assist with or perform laboratory techniques and tests conducted within Pathology, including molecular pathology and histopathological procedures.
  • Prepare fixed tissue samples for long-term storage and archiving of formalin-fixed tissues and paraffin wax blocks.
  • Comply with lab waste management procedures and complete relevant documentation.
  • Provide technical support, tissue sampling, and preservation expertise for post-mortem examinations on a range of livestock species in high biocontainment facilities.
  • Line and/or functional management of laboratory staff, supervision of students, visitors, and contractors within high containment areas.
  • Maintain knowledge of APHA's diversity policy and implement it within the team.
  • Manage laboratory equipment, including calibration, monitoring, and routine maintenance.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with Pathology and Animal Sciences and APHA Safety and Quality Policies.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A degree in biological/biomedical/bioveterinary science or relevant proven experience.
  • Strong technical and laboratory skills, with experience in molecular pathology and histopathological procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Knowledge of APHA's policies and procedures, including ISO17025 and ISO9001.
