Specialist Foster Carer Opportunity

Cheshire West and Chester Council is seeking skilled and experienced foster carers to join our Specialist Foster Carer scheme. This scheme aims to provide a family environment that can meet the needs of young people who have complex backgrounds.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide a stable and supportive home environment for young people with complex needs.
  • Work collaboratively with a professional team to create a child-centred care and support plan.
  • Uphold professional fostering standards, including high-quality recording and reporting.
  • Engage in therapeutic work with young people to address their needs and promote their well-being.
Requirements
  • Successful completion of a foster carer assessment and approval by Cheshire West and Chester Council.
  • Availability to care for young people on a full-time basis.
  • Room to support a child or adolescent in your home.
  • Ability to offer a home to a solo child.
  • Willingness to provide a durable relationship and offer stability.
  • Ability to like and relate to young people with complex and troubled backgrounds.
  • Commitment to providing life-enhancing opportunities and life skills to young people.
  • Ability to live in the Cheshire West and Chester area or close by.
  • Ability to demonstrate a caring attitude that is child-centred and relational.
  • Ability to offer unconditional positive regard and encouragement to young people, even while challenging unacceptable behaviour if needed.
  • Support for young people who are not engaging in education, training, and employment.
  • Ability to drive and have a vehicle suitable for fostering activities.
  • Ability to complete mandatory training requirements.
  • Ability to support children and young people with family contact.

Key Experience
  • Demonstrated experience of working with children and adolescents with complex backgrounds.
  • Understanding of the impact of trauma, attachment, and neglect on children and adolescents.
  • Engagement as part of the wider professional team involved in the scheme to create child-centred care and support.
  • Upholding professional fostering standards, including high-quality recording and reporting.
  • Understanding of child development and its effects on life experience.
  • Work therapeutically with children and adolescents in line with 'our way of working' model.
Support
  • Regular supervision
  • Carers will be afforded a standard skills and training package as well as a suite of training tailored to their needs.
  • Regular liaison, joint working, and support from the wider scheme team including a teacher, therapist, family support worker, and social worker.
  • Assessments of each young person's support needs and development of support plans.
