Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Midwife to join our team as a Practice Development Midwife. This is an exciting opportunity to advance and enhance the quality of care within Maternity.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating educational and developmental programmes for midwives and other healthcare professionals to improve clinical practices and patient outcomes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing curriculum, training materials, and resources to enhance clinical skills and knowledge.
  • Staying updated on the latest evidence-based practices in midwifery.
  • Developing and updating clinical guidelines and standards to ensure adherence to best practices.
  • Conducting training sessions and workshops for midwives to improve their clinical competencies.
  • Providing ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance the skills of the maternity care team.
  • Collaborating with healthcare teams to identify areas for improvement in maternity care.
  • Implementing quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and satisfaction.
  • Engaging in research activities to contribute to the advancement of midwifery practices.
  • Integrating innovative approaches and technologies into clinical care as appropriate.
  • Providing mentorship and support to midwives, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Addressing challenges and concerns related to clinical practices through guidance and coaching.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Registered Midwife with a UK NMC Pin.
  • SSSA/Mentorship qualification.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.

Desirable criteria include:

  • PGCert.
  • Knowledge of educational standards and practice.
  • Understanding of the principles of teaching and learning and their application within the practice setting.
  • Understanding and knowledge of curriculum design and development.
  • Awareness of MIS/ Core competency framework and other local, regional and national initiatives.
  • Knowledge of a variety of teaching methods.

The successful candidate will have substantial post-registration experience, with evidence of working in all areas of maternity. They will also have experience teaching in a variety of settings and be able to present articulately to large groups of people.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent time management and organisational skills, excellent verbal, written, interpersonal & communication skills, and be proficient in venepuncture, cannulation, perineal suturing and episiotomy.

They will also be able to give effective feedback and feedforward to maternity staff, assess competence and level of understanding, demonstrate leadership skills, and demonstrate understanding of PDM role and able to recognise when to escalate to PDM Lead.

The successful candidate will be able to co-ordinate & liaise within a multidisciplinary team, prioritise workload, and possess excellent interpersonal and customer care skills, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

They will also be IT/Computer literate and have a strong understanding of the principles of teaching and learning and their application within the practice setting.
