Key Responsibilities

You will provide support across all our ophthalmology services as needed, and we promote rotational working through various service departments, from outpatient clinics to day case units, to enhance your development and experience.

Outpatient Services: Responsible for delivering a range of support to specialized services within ophthalmic outpatient clinics, including chaperone duties to assist our patients and clinicians, conducting various visual assessments, and supporting nurse-led injection clinics.

Day Case Unit & Emergency Eye Clinic: Prepare patients for surgical procedures and facilitate discharges from the department with a holistic approach to care, ensuring that patients receive safe, personalized, and effective care throughout their visit while acting as their advocate.

You must demonstrate effective communication skills, be a compassionate and diligent professional, and be committed to delivering excellent patient care in a busy and often challenging environment.

Strong time management skills are essential, as is the ability to prioritize your workload.

You will engage in service improvement initiatives and participate in relevant meetings.

Our Ophthalmology services are distributed across three primary sites, and we also operate a peripheral clinic. Our day case services are located within the designated wing of one of our hospitals.

Our outpatient services operate Monday to Friday, with opportunities for flexible working arrangements where feasible.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

To deliver SAFE, PERSONAL, and EFFECTIVE patient care consistently.

Responsible for providing a range of support to our specialized services within ophthalmic outpatient clinics, day case units, and emergency eye clinics as required.

To support the efficient operation of the clinic environment by undertaking various non-clinical tasks that contribute to maintaining a safe and clean setting.

Essential Criteria:

  • English language and mathematics GCSE level 4 or above or equivalent.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Clear and accurate record-keeping and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload effectively.
  • Willingness to pursue future self-development and meet service needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality and act professionally at all times.
  • Adaptability to change and a flexible attitude.
  • Demonstrate a compassionate and sensitive approach when interacting with colleagues, staff, and patients.
  • Enthusiasm and flexibility to meet the needs of the public.
  • Full dexterity and mobility to assist patients and manage equipment.
  • Awareness of health and safety protocols in the workplace.
  • Ability to work flexibly across multiple sites as service demands dictate.
  • Experience in managing flexibility within a service positively.
  • Capability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Completion of the ELHT care certificate.
  • NVQ level II in care or equivalent, or willingness to undertake.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting is advantageous but not essential as comprehensive training will be provided.
  • Ability to mentor and support others.
