JOB TITLE: Senior Engineering Manager (z Mainframe - MQ)
SALARY: £80,206 - £94,360
LOCATION: Edinburgh
WORKING HOURS: Full-time - this role requires availability outside of standard working hours, with an additional on-call compensation.
WORKING PATTERN: We embrace a hybrid work model, which entails spending a minimum of two days per week, or 40% of your time, at our office.
About the Role
As a pivotal member of the z Mainframe Lab, you will report directly to the Technical Product Owner for z Mainframe Hosting, overseeing a team of approximately 12 z MQ engineers. The z Mainframe Lab is responsible for maintaining the essential infrastructure that supports Lloyds Banking Group's (LBG) strategic transactional processing systems, specifically the IBM Z Mainframe, which is our preferred platform for high-end transactional processing.
We are seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead, motivate, and nurture a team of backend engineers. You will spearhead strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the agility, operational pace, and cost-effectiveness of our z Mainframe Lab. The services you will manage are integral to our infrastructure and demand high standards while adapting swiftly to meet customer needs. This is an exciting opportunity to join the z Mainframe team during a significant transformation phase.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead a team of around 12 engineers, focusing on personal development and daily task management, which will constitute about 30% of your role.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to translate technical issues into accessible language.
- Oversee Incident & Change Management processes.
- Implement Risk Management and controls.
- Facilitate service enhancements, transition to Agile methodologies, and utilize JIRA and Jira Align tools.
- Drive the prioritization of tasks within the backlog and manage team capacity.
- Plan and support system upgrades and decommissioning activities.
- Act as the technical liaison for the team, guiding engineering product evolution within the z Mainframe lab.
- Support the Technical Product Owner.
- Manage talent development initiatives, including apprenticeship, internship, and graduate programs.

Qualifications:
- Proven experience in operational and line management, including talent development for a small to medium-sized engineering team.
- Background in the z Mainframe sector with hands-on engineering expertise in relevant technical areas.
- Experience in a senior technical leadership role with full line and task management responsibilities.
