Position Overview
This role is integral to the Marine Management Organisation (MMO), an independent body dedicated to safeguarding the marine environment and promoting sustainable marine practices.
About the Organisation
The MMO operates under the mandate of the government to ensure clean, healthy, and biologically diverse seas. Our mission is to protect marine ecosystems while facilitating economic growth through responsible marine activities.
With a workforce of approximately 500 professionals, we have a presence across the English coastline, providing local expertise and support to various maritime sectors.
Role Responsibilities
The Marine Compliance Officer is tasked with the critical responsibility of enforcing maritime regulations and ensuring adherence to sea fisheries legislation, the Marine and Coastal Access Act, and other relevant environmental laws.
Key duties include:
- Monitoring fishing activities and assessing compliance through data analysis.
- Conducting risk assessments and gathering intelligence related to maritime operations.
- Performing inspections of fishing vessels both in port and potentially at sea.
- Evaluating fishing industry facilities, including markets and merchant operations.
- Overseeing marine licensable activities to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Monitoring activities that may impact marine protected areas or endangered species.
- Investigating incidents of non-compliance and taking appropriate enforcement actions.
Additionally, the role requires participation in mandatory training to achieve accreditation as a warranted Marine Enforcement Officer.
This position may involve irregular hours and the need for flexibility in work schedules.
Qualifications
A valid UK Car Driving Licence is required for this position.
