Job Description

Job Summary

The successful candidate will lead and facilitate a programme aimed at equipping midwives and obstetricians to increase their knowledge and competence in identifying fetal well-being, potential fetal compromise, and actual fetal compromise in all clinical settings and improve clinical decision-making.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop staff awareness in recognizing factors that could contribute to misinterpretation of cardiotocography (CTGs) and impaired clinical decision-making.
  • Ensure staff are assessing fetal well-being in the context of the woman's health, pregnancy, gestation, and stage of labour.
  • Develop midwives' competence in undertaking intelligent intermittent auscultation of the fetal heart in low-risk women as per the Trust and NICE guidelines.
  • Support staff in enhancing their skills in reducing risk within clinical practice.
  • Take a lead role in supporting the development of a safety culture within the context of resource constraints and multiple conflicting priorities.
  • Facilitate staff in developing and applying reflective practice skills.
  • Review, develop, and support current training packages and educational resources.
  • Work in collaboration with all grades and specialties to ensure the Trust is meeting guidance and standards in relation to saving babies' lives.
  • Report and provide constructive feedback on a regular basis, while identifying and disseminating learning from audits, outcomes, practice, and teaching sessions.
  • Working to continue to provide comprehensive training and competency testing to give assurance that all staff responsible for fetal assessment and well-being are competent.

Clinical Practice

  • Ensure that all midwives and obstetricians undertake the competency test in assessing fetal well-being.
  • Provide teaching and support for staff who need to repeat the competency test.
  • Lead CTG workshops, maintaining attendance registers to ensure compliance for midwives and medical staff.
  • Disseminate learning which emerges from workshops.
  • Take a lead role in auditing and incident reviewing, working with the fetal monitoring lead obstetrician to identify learning and themes.
  • Use findings of such cases for reflective practice sessions.
  • Use every opportunity to facilitate teaching, learning, and reflection within the clinical area.

Professional Leadership

  • Act as a clinical role model for effective clinical leadership enabling and facilitating others to take forward initiatives around saving babies' lives and fetal monitoring.
  • Work collaboratively with other professional groups to maximise development opportunities and inter-professional learning opportunities.
  • Maximise opportunities to share good practices and innovations with colleagues locally and nationally.
  • Contribute to the development of a learning organisation, alerting the appropriate parties to resource issues which may affect this.
  • Identify own training and professional development needs to maintain clinical credibility.
  • Influence and nurture positive attitudes and behaviours within the teams and wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Lead the change management process where indicated using QI methodology.
  • Provide training and support to all staff in professional growth.
  • Manage and resolve conflict.
  • Attend unit meetings, service level meetings, Trust, and ICS meetings, making contributions towards professional, organisational, and service progress.

Organisational and Professional Development

  • Respond to incidents and complaints as they arise in line with Trust policy.
  • Identify own development needs and actively work towards own professional development (IPR to support this).
  • Provide emergency cover and at short notice for unexpected absence/sickness across the maternity service.
  • Participate in a Midwifery on-call rota.

Communication

  • Maintain effective communication remaining polite and courteous in all situations.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Manage complaints in line with Trust policy.
  • Report clinical and non-clinical risk management issues in line with Trust policy and ensure appropriate feedback to staff.
  • Ensure effective communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
