About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to join our Policy and Standards team as a Head of System Engineering and Technical Governance. This is a key role within the Asset Management and Operations Directorate, responsible for ensuring that suitable policy and standards are in place for all Transmission projects and business areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain technical specifications for real-time system (RTS) architectures and equipment used in the SSEN Transmission network substations, including Ethernet networks, RTUs, HMIs, and substation control systems.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to update technical specifications based on technology advancements and engage in technical and economic justification for changes.
  • Work with Technical Assurance engineers to ensure that all RTS equipment types are safe, adequately tested, configured, and validated prior to approval for use on the network.
  • Assist the Design Authority in verifying project proposals for substation control systems, ensuring they are fit for purpose and identify any scope changes required to manage the network in accordance with legislation, Grid Code, and specifications.
Requirements
  • Chartered Engineer with a relevant institution or working towards chartered status.
  • Demonstrable experience in design, testing, and specification of control systems, including IEC61850, PTP, and Ethernet architectures within electrical substations or similar environments.
  • Knowledge of fibre installation, serial connectivity, DNP3, and other control system protocols.
  • Knowledge of implementation of cybersecurity best practices within a substation or operational technology environment, as well as communications technologies and systems.
