Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Mortgage Underwriter Specialist to join our team at Coventry Building Society. As a key member of our underwriting team, you will be responsible for making informed lending decisions on residential and buy-to-let mortgage applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Exercise discretion over lending policy to ensure that decisions are made in line with the Society's risk appetite.
  • Provide senior underwriting expertise on complex and high-value cases, making final decisions while ensuring the quality of the Society's lending book.
  • Act as a role model for expert underwriting and provide coaching, training, and development to enhance colleague underwriting and customer service capabilities.
  • Persuade and influence up to executive level, providing robust justification of lending decisions made and building confidence in the quality of underwriting conducted through the department.
  • Be a point of escalation for queries or challenges from internal and external customers on lending decisions.

Requirements:

  • Experience in residential and BTL mortgage underwriting, with a specialization in self-employed and special purpose vehicle underwriting being advantageous.
  • Current knowledge of mortgage markets, products, regulatory requirements, and the changing climate of demands surrounding credit risk and financial crime.
  • Ability to communicate effectively up to senior manager/executive level and demonstrate a positive, proactive approach to team work.
  • Ability to challenge policies, processes, and procedures when they are not in line with putting the customer first or reducing Society risk.
