The Clinical Coding department operates within the Digital Division of our healthcare group, focusing on the extraction and classification of intricate clinical data that accurately reflects a patient's diagnostic and procedural healthcare status during their care journey.

Accurate documentation and coding of clinical activities are essential for assessing the quality of our healthcare services. The data we compile is utilized across various sectors of our organization to ensure the delivery of reliable and high-quality patient care.

Certified Clinical Coders are integral to our Clinical Coding team, playing a crucial role in the overall management of our services, as their work directly impacts revenue through the NHS Payment Scheme.

Key Responsibilities

As a Certified Clinical Coder, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Timely extraction, analysis, and coding of complex clinical information that describes a patient's diagnostic and procedural healthcare status using ICD-10 and OPCS-4 classifications.
  • Ensuring the quality and accuracy of coded data in accordance with all relevant National Clinical Coding Standards and Local Clinical Coding Policies.
  • Entering codified data into the Patient Administration System (PAS) promptly, adhering to defined local and national timelines.
  • Supporting the Clinical Coding Team Leader in the daily planning, organization, and execution of clinical coding tasks, overseeing workload, and collaborating with medical staff to resolve coding issues.
  • Communicating complex coding regulations to various stakeholders, including medical, clinical, and administrative personnel, as well as external agencies.
  • Working alongside Health Intelligence colleagues to maintain high data quality standards, ensuring accurate consultant, specialty, and admission date information.
  • Mentoring Associate Clinical Coders and assisting in the training of new or less experienced team members.
  • Collaborating with the Clinical Coding Team Leads to ensure timely submission of codified data.
  • Participating in departmental audits and leading consistency and accuracy checks as required.
  • Contributing to transformation and cost-improvement initiatives that leverage coded data for financial benefits.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs, including English and Maths at Grade C/Grade 4 or equivalent.
  • National Clinical Coding Qualification with Accredited Clinical Coder status.
  • Completion of a Clinical Coding Standards Refresher Course within the last three years.

Desirable:

  • A Level in a STEM subject at Grade C or equivalent.

Skills and Attributes

Essential:

  • Expertise in National Clinical Coding Standards, demonstrated through audit results and Accredited Clinical Coder status.
  • Strong understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 suite.
  • Experience in administrative and clerical roles within an office setting.
  • Two years of experience in an Acute NHS Trust or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with hospital and clinical information systems.
  • Knowledge of SNOMED-CT.
  • Understanding of the relationship between coded data and HRG allocation.
  • Experience in mentoring colleagues.
