Collaborative Research Opportunity in Environmental Science

This funding initiative provides an excellent opportunity for researchers based in the UK and the US to collaborate and seek financial support from either NSF or NERC through established programs, thereby simplifying the review process.
Collaborative projects must adhere to the guidelines outlined in the agreement between NERC and NSF, ensuring alignment with the missions of both organizations.
Eligibility Criteria for UK-based Applicants:
- Must be affiliated with a UK research institution eligible for NERC funding
- Must hold a position at lecturer level (or equivalent) or higher
Upon selection, UK-based researchers will receive backing from NERC, while their US counterparts will be funded by NSF.
Research ScopeProposals for collaborative research can encompass a variety of disciplines but should align with the objectives of both NERC and NSF GEO or BIO-DEB programs.
Available FundingNERC will finance 80% of the full economic costs for UK applicants across various expense categories. Equipment costs will be fully covered.
For applications led by NERC, the total budget must comply with specific limits established by the funding schemes.
For NSF-led applications, the UK applicant may request funding up to a defined limit without certain restrictions.
The collaborative team must determine the lead agency based on the research location and funding allocation.
Expression of InterestBefore submitting a comprehensive application, an expression of interest is required, outlining the research team, project summary, necessary facilities, and funding estimates.
NERC and NSF strive to respond to all expressions of interest within one month.
Full Application ProcessComprehensive applications must be submitted within a year of receiving approval for the expression of interest.
For NERC-led applications, the UK-based lead should follow specific guidelines for application preparation and submission.
For NSF-led applications, the US-based lead must adhere to NSF's application procedures and submit through the FastLane system.
Notification of Successful ApplicationsUpon completion of the assessment process, successful applicants will be informed by the lead agency.
