We invite applications for a Research Associate role focused on Photonics AI within the Emergent Photonics Centre in the Department of Physics. This position is initially set for a duration of two years, with the possibility of extension based on the evolving research needs.
The role is part of a significant project funded by the EPSRC Quantum Technologies fellowship, titled "AI-powered micro-comb lasers: a new approach to transfer portable atomic clock accuracy in integrated photonics". This initiative aims to innovate a new category of AI-enhanced ultrafast lasers that can adaptively optimize their output in real-time under practical experimental conditions.
The primary objective of this position is to develop and execute experimental frameworks that apply various machine-learning control strategies to stabilize ultrafast lasers operating at elevated optical powers. This includes working with mode-locked fiber lasers and micro-combs. Our methodology integrates traditional stabilization techniques, such as feedback control, with cutting-edge machine learning methodologies, including reinforcement learning, physics-informed neural networks, and neuromorphic photonic low-latency predictors.
The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in a relevant field (such as nonlinear photonics, ultrafast photonics, or nonlinear wave propagation) and have a background in ultrafast characterization and machine-learning applications in photonics, demonstrated by a strong publication record. Experience with photonic bench setups is advantageous, alongside a foundational understanding of ultrafast laser operations and a history of international collaboration and robust publication strategies. Evidence of leadership potential, independence, and a strong drive are also critical.
Key responsibilities for this role include:
- Operating ultrafast lasers and optical frequency combs.
- Designing optical benches.
- Collecting data using advanced electronics and conducting thorough analyses.
The successful candidate will be integrated into the Department of Physics and the Emergent Photonics Research Centre, collaborating closely with Dr. Juan Sebastian Totero Gongora and other researchers engaged in various ERC, EPSRC, and Leverhulme Trust projects in nonlinear photonics, metrology, and integrated photonics. They will join a broader community of researchers across Physics, Chemistry, and Computer Science at Loughborough University, actively contributing to the field of Photonics.
