Position Overview
Barts Health NHS Trust is seeking a dedicated and NMC or HCPC registered professional with relevant clinical experience or laboratory expertise in blood transfusion to fulfill the role of a Specialist Transfusion Practitioner. We are committed to delivering a superior transfusion service and invite candidates who share this vision.
The successful applicant will primarily operate from a designated hospital site but may be required to provide support across various locations within the Trust as needed. You will become part of a collaborative team that includes a Lead Transfusion Practitioner, several other Transfusion Practitioners, and Assistant Transfusion Practitioners across multiple sites. This role offers the opportunity to represent Blood Transfusion at both regional and national forums, engage in service enhancement through clinical audits, and contribute to Quality Improvement initiatives while ensuring a compliant and high-quality blood transfusion service.
Main Responsibilities
The Specialist Transfusion Practitioner will collaborate with the Transfusion Committee and the broader transfusion team to promote the responsible use of blood and its components by:
- Providing training and education to colleagues regarding the transfusion pathway tailored to their specific roles.
- Developing and reviewing policies, guidelines, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Conducting incident reporting and investigations, with training provided on the investigation of clinical transfusion errors and adverse events.
- Auditing blood transfusion practices to ensure adherence to local and national standards, redesigning processes as necessary to foster continuous improvement.
- Extracting and summarizing high-quality transfusion-related data to support evidence-based modifications to procedures.

Qualifications and Experience
Essential Criteria:
- Approved Degree in Nursing or Biomedical Science (or equivalent).
- MSc in Nursing or Higher Specialist/FIBMS/MSc in Biomedical Science from an accredited institution.
- NMC Pin or HCPC registration.
- Minimum of 5 years' relevant post-registration experience in a related specialty.
- Experience in audit and policy development.
Desirable Criteria:
- Transfusion-specific qualifications or modules in Haematology.
- Leadership or Management qualifications.
- Teaching or Mentoring qualifications.
