As a Surface Treatment Specialist, your role will involve preparing and refinishing a diverse array of equipment, including ground apparatus, wooden structures, aircraft components, aircrew helmets, and airborne gas cylinders.

You will be responsible for restoring and applying specialized coatings to equipment to meet high standards, adhering to approved specifications and operational instructions, utilizing specific tools and machinery such as pneumatic, airless, and electrostatic systems.

This position requires you to have resided in the UK for the past five years and to obtain the necessary security clearance without any restrictions that would impede your ability to perform the role. Failure to secure this clearance, or obtaining it with limitations that affect your job responsibilities, may result in the withdrawal of any conditional offer made to you. The process for obtaining SC security clearance can be extensive, and we reserve the right to retract any conditional offer if the required clearance is not achieved within a specified timeframe.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adherence to regulatory and organizational standards, including Health and Safety legislation.
  • Conducting inspections on breathing air and equipment to ensure safe operations.
  • Understanding and complying with statutory, quality, and organizational requirements related to aviation, including safety protocols, documentation, and occupational health standards.
  • Ensuring safe storage of materials, managing stock rotation, maintaining batch controls, and properly disposing of expired stock and waste materials.
  • Measuring and documenting the usage of Volatile Organic Compounds, air movement, and temperatures in Spray Bays, as well as surface thickness of coatings and paint viscosity as required.
  • Monitoring the use of hand-operated tools concerning Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) and ensuring limits are not exceeded.
  • Prioritizing and coordinating workflow within the Paint Section in collaboration with Team Leaders and colleagues.
  • Certifying that tasks are executed in accordance with operational instructions.

Candidate Profile

To be considered for this position, you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Completion of an Engineering Apprenticeship, Armed Forces equivalent such as RAF Trade Group 13 Painter and Finisher, or an equivalent industry-recognized standard such as ICATS (Industrial Coatings Application Training Scheme).
  • Proficiency in the operation of paint spraying equipment, shot-blasting booths, and plastic media cabinets.
  • Familiarity with preparation processes including degreasing, pre-treatments, masking, filling, and sanding.
  • Knowledge of fiberglass and body filler repair techniques.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand engineering data, drawings, specifications, manuals, and computer-generated information.
  • Competence in IT, including Microsoft Office applications.
