Position Overview

An exciting opportunity has emerged within the UHB Haematology department, aimed at enhancing our training framework. The successful candidate will primarily operate from BHH while also providing support at GHH and SH, collaborating closely with the QEH training lead.

The individual in this role will be tasked with the execution, facilitation, and upkeep of the training and competency evaluation system throughout the department. This includes aiding personnel engaged in professional or academic advancement programs, which are essential for ensuring adherence to UKAS, relevant ISO standards, HTA, and MHRA Blood Quality and Safety Regulations. The role is crucial for workforce development, contributing to the sustainability of our operations. The post holder will also play a significant part in maintaining training credentials for professional development with the IBMS. Candidates must possess HCPC registration, an MSc or equivalent qualification, and a recognized training qualification such as the IBMS Certificate of Expert Practice in Training.

Key Responsibilities

Support the Laboratory Manager and Group Training Lead in ensuring comprehensive compliance with all legal obligations regarding staff training, education, competencies, and ongoing professional development. Conduct a local induction program that encompasses training and competency assessments for all new personnel in the department, ensuring that all staff are evaluated in the essential skills required for their positions.

Maintain and apply cross-site approved training status with the Institute of Biomedical Science for all training levels offered by the department.

Engage with external organizations, including professional bodies, IBMS, and Higher Education Institutions, to facilitate the application of development program portfolios and coordinate examinations, including portfolio verifications and assessments.

Encourage and support staff in their participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities, including assistance with financial sponsorship applications, subject to prior approval from relevant authorities.

Regularly review training portfolios, competencies, and training manuals to ensure they are current and validated promptly as competencies and proficiencies are achieved, reporting any discrepancies to the Group Training Lead.

Undertake duties as an external assessor, such as the IBMS assessor for portfolio verification and Specialist Portfolio assessments.

Stay informed about the latest relevant ISO, HTA, MHRA, HCPC, IBMS, and NSHCS standards.

Qualifications

Essential

  • State registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • MSc or equivalent academic qualification recognized by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) OR Equivalent Level 7 Post Graduate Certification or Diploma
  • Qualification in Delivering Training.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and proficiency in line with HCPC guidelines.
  • Post-registration specialty training in accordance with IBMS guidelines.

Desirable

  • Completion of a formal management course.
  • Awareness of current issues within Pathology at both local and national levels.

Experience

Essential

  • Ongoing completion of a portfolio demonstrating continuing competence in the area of expertise and professional development.
  • Discipline-specific proficiency for HCPC registration.
  • Significant post-registration experience in a specific laboratory discipline.
  • Demonstrable experience in delivering training.
  • Specialized knowledge of:
    • Good laboratory practice, good manufacturing practice, and quality assurance practices.
    • Laboratory accreditation, relevant ISO, and European standards.
    • Fault finding and troubleshooting.
    • Laboratory health and safety.
    • HCPC and IBMS professional standards, ethics, and proficiencies.
    • Biomedical Science theory and practice (Haematology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cellular Pathology, and Molecular Pathology).

Desirable

  • Evidence of supervisory experience or role.
  • Understanding of laboratory accreditation (ISO 15189, MHRA).
  • Evidence of HR and personnel experience.
