Train Drivers are pivotal in establishing a modern standard for rail travel, emphasizing a seamless, quick, and enjoyable experience for passengers. Beyond merely transporting customers to their destinations, this role involves providing outstanding customer service, adhering to established protocols, and collaborating with team members to ensure efficient service delivery.

Our training program demands dedication, a commitment to an intensive training period, and meticulous attention to detail, but it offers a fulfilling career path with the chance to contribute to the evolving landscape of travel. Throughout the training phase, candidates will undergo various assessments, both practical and theoretical, equipping them with the necessary skills and support to advance to a Qualified Driver.

Candidate Profile:

Are you skilled in time management and capable of working independently while maintaining focus in a safety-oriented environment?

Can you consistently follow instructions, particularly when safety is of utmost importance?

Do you possess excellent communication abilities and thrive in an environment governed by strict protocols?

Are you keen on assisting colleagues and customers with a focus on safety and service?

If your answers are affirmative, this position may represent a significant career opportunity for you.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old to qualify for the training program, as mandated by industry standards.
  • Residency within a 60-minute travel radius to the depot is essential, without reliance on public transport when unavailable. This requirement is non-negotiable due to safety responsibilities.
  • Willingness to work shifts with varying start times, including weekends and night shifts.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive driver medical examination, which includes hearing, vision, and color vision assessments (using Ishihara plates). Refer to the FAQ section for detailed medical standards.

Additional Insights:

No prior railway experience is necessary; we welcome candidates from diverse industries and backgrounds. What we seek is your energy, enthusiasm, and eagerness to learn in a structured setting.

Great Western Railway is dedicated to fostering an inclusive workplace, ensuring that we provide a railway experience that is accessible to all customers.

Given the critical nature of this safety role, our recruitment process is rigorous, incorporating various ability assessments to evaluate the essential competencies required for the position. However, candidates will receive Practice Test Materials prior to any assessment events, allowing ample time for preparation.

The training salary is set at £28,268 per annum, increasing to £60,124 upon full qualification.

We are currently seeking Trainee Drivers to be part of our Talent Pool.

Benefits:

In addition to a supportive team environment and thorough training, all GWR employees enjoy a variety of benefits, including ongoing professional development, a defined benefit pension scheme, complimentary rail travel across the GWR network for employees and their families, a company-sponsored healthcare plan, discounts on shopping and gym memberships, and an employee assistance program.
