We are seeking a skilled and proactive Intellectual Property Counsel to join our IP team in London.

Role Overview
The Intellectual Property Counsel will report directly to the Head of Patents, providing essential patent and related IP support to various Haleon stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
The role encompasses a range of responsibilities, including:

  • Managing IP matters related to invention harvesting, patent drafting, prosecution, enforcement, freedom-to-operate assessments, competitive landscape evaluations, patent validity, infringement issues, IP risk management, and opposition and appeal cases for a selection of global brands.
  • Supporting intricate patent and related projects.
  • Overseeing IP aspects of contractual agreements with external collaborators.
  • Assisting in IP due diligence initiatives, including mergers and acquisitions, and litigation matters.

Collaboration

As an Intellectual Property Counsel at Haleon, you will collaborate closely with a team reporting to the Head of IP. Your role will involve regular interaction with other IP professionals globally, including brand rights attorneys and patent formalities staff. You will also engage with R&D scientists, legal professionals, and various business stakeholders, fostering strong relationships with external partners.

Responsibilities Include

  • Invention harvesting within Haleon's global R&D teams.
  • Preparing and filing registered designs to safeguard the visual aspects of Haleon's products.
  • Managing all facets of a global IP portfolio, including drafting, prosecution, and providing advisory services to R&D and business units.
  • Developing and implementing IP strategies for new products on a global scale.
  • Establishing, negotiating, and advising on all IP elements for various transactional matters, including R&D agreements, licensing, acquisitions, and confidentiality agreements.
  • Participating in oppositions, oral hearings, and appeals.
  • Offering patent validity and infringement guidance to R&D and relevant business units.
  • Promoting IP awareness within Haleon's global R&D community and business teams.
  • Managing relationships and collaborating extensively with external counsel as needed.
  • Engaging in departmental activities, including meetings focused on information sharing, case law awareness, and discussions on departmental practices and policies.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We are looking for candidates who possess:

  • A degree in a STEM field.
  • Full qualification as a European Patent Attorney.
  • Full qualification as a UK Patent Attorney or national equivalent.
  • A minimum of 2 years of post-qualification experience in an in-house IP department or a reputable private practice, particularly supporting clients in chemistry, FMCG, or life sciences.
  • In-house experience is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • A strong commercial understanding and business acumen to leverage Haleon's IP for competitive advantage.
