Public Health Nurse Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Public Health Nurse to join our team at the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a Public Health Nurse, you will play a critical role in providing professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes, and schools, as well as other community or congregate care settings.
Key Responsibilities- Provides professional nursing care to patients in various settings, including clinics, homes, and schools.
- Performs nursing assessments, develops and implements care plans, and evaluates outcomes.
- Participates in public health emergencies and community health assessments.
- May supervise support staff and provide guidance on nursing practices.
- Works collaboratively with other health department agencies and community partners to support public health initiatives.
- Adheres to nursing directives, agency protocols, and guidelines.
- Practices within the realm of the Nurse Practice Act and related Acts governing health professionals and health laws.
- Assesses the health status and health literacy of individuals and families, including determinants of health, using multiple sources of data.
- Applies ethical, legal, and policy guidelines and principles in the collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of data and information.
- Uses information technology effectively to collect, analyze, store, and retrieve data related to public health nursing services.
- Uses evidence-based strategies or promising practices from across disciplines to promote health in communities and populations.
- May administer routine child and adult immunizations to clients.
- Requires licensure as an RN in Virginia or a compact state.
- Must obtain RN license within 90 days of the date of hire or be subject to termination.
- Requires BLS certification.
- Must adhere to all safety policies, including a review of immunizations, driver safety policies, and all other state policies.
- Communicates verbally and in writing, analyzes problems, situations, and suggests solutions, leadership, follow directions, and establishes priorities.
- Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling techniques.
- Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member, and relate to the public.
- Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology, immunizations, basic nursing science, medical terminology, and case management.
- Additional study in the area of health promotion or public health is preferred.
- Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion.
