About the Position

Balfour Beatty is looking for a Principal Electrical Substation Designer to become a key member of the Power T&D team. This position focuses on overseeing the high voltage (HV) primary engineering design for electrical substation projects, reaching up to 400kV, with the support of design engineers. Key responsibilities include strategic planning, procurement, and management of engineering teams.

General Duties:
  • Ensure adherence to company protocols
  • Deliver engineering designs within established guidelines
  • Identify and address training requirements for the design team
  • Manage design discrepancies and work collaboratively with project engineering managers
  • Support the daily operations of the design department
Planning Duties:
  • Distribute work packages and manage team workload
  • Develop and review Design and Engineering Management Plans
  • Update the costing system as necessary
  • Coordinate with project managers and other divisions
  • Define design requirements and resources for project execution
Core Responsibilities:
  • Specify necessary equipment and materials
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards and regulations
  • Participate in design reviews and meetings
  • Guide the technical direction of the engineering team
  • Prepare installation and commissioning documentation
  • Review and approve engineering designs
  • Provide assistance to various departments as needed
Qualifications:
  • Education: HND in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience: More than 10 years in a design office setting
  • Skills: Proficiency in Autocad, Microsoft Office, and design/specification of electrical power systems
  • Prior experience as a senior HV Substation Primary Plant Design Engineer
  • Familiarity with protection and control aspects and TP141 HV Substation qualification is advantageous
