Position Summary

We are seeking a Microsoft 365 Solutions Engineer to join our dynamic and fast-paced technical Service Delivery team within the UK Government.

This role offers the opportunity to engage in diverse and evolving tasks, ensuring that each day presents new challenges. You will be part of a supportive and inclusive atmosphere, collaborating with colleagues from various technical and business backgrounds to accomplish our objectives.

Your insights will be valued, and you will have the opportunity to influence the strategic direction of our IT and Telecoms services. We provide relevant training opportunities along with technical and business support from experienced professionals.

This position reports to the Head of ICT Service Delivery. You will collaborate closely with all sectors of the ICT team, other government departments, No10 business units, and suppliers to maximize the potential of our M365 suite, simplifying and modernizing business processes. Your responsibilities will include maintaining, enhancing, and deploying necessary services, as well as generating innovative ideas and developing a comprehensive M365 roadmap.

Utilizing your technical expertise, problem-solving abilities, and analytical skills, you will address and resolve any issues related to M365 services promptly.

Key Responsibilities:

Your primary responsibilities will include managing, maintaining, and enhancing the M365 technologies utilized by staff to ensure optimal service delivery, value for money, and robust security measures. You will also provide support to the business regarding any M365 products.

  • Collaborating with the ICT Service Delivery team to develop modern, scalable, and secure IT systems.
  • Managing, maintaining, researching, recommending, and implementing best practices for Exchange, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, and related products.
  • Ensuring high availability and performance of our Microsoft 365 services.
  • Promoting the internal toolset and ensuring full utilization of its capabilities.
  • Liaising with users, architects, and business areas to explore how the M365 suite can enhance efficiency, reduce costs, or replace other systems.
  • Working with Microsoft account managers and the ICT support team to stay informed about new features and releases, ensuring business areas are aware of new functionalities prior to rollout.
  • Guiding and training junior team members in daily procedures to enable them to assist users and perform basic ICT administration tasks.
  • Supporting the Head of No10 IT Service Delivery in developing network strategies and delivering projects that meet business requirements on time and within budget.

Daily Activities:

  • Monitoring, administering, and managing Microsoft 365 services, including Entra ID, Exchange Online/On-Prem, SharePoint, Teams, and Intune.
  • Ensuring service availability, performance, and security.
  • Investigating and resolving service faults.
  • Implementing preventative measures and advising on solutions.
  • Configuring collaboration features, permissions, and access controls.
  • Utilizing PowerShell or other scripting languages to automate repetitive tasks.
  • Creating and maintaining scripts for provisioning, user management, and reporting.
  • Performing administration, maintenance, and system tasks such as testing, applying updates, patches, and feature releases to Microsoft 365 services.
  • Documenting configurations, procedures, and best practices.
  • Optimizing licensing and subscription costs.
  • Mentoring and leading less experienced team members to enhance their skills.
  • Staying updated with new practices and innovations in technology.
  • Providing recommendations to improve system performance, security, and reliability.
  • Participating in the full team on-call support rota.

Important Considerations:

As with most organizations, we must maintain our services around the clock, which may require planned and unplanned out-of-hours work. Participation in an on-call rota is expected, for which an allowance or overtime will be compensated. This rota may include evenings, weekends, and public holidays.

Occasional travel to remote sites may be necessary, and there may be a requirement for national or international travel based on business needs, which could involve overnight stays.

Essential Experience and Skills:

  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft 365 technologies, including Exchange, OneDrive for Business, Teams, SharePoint, Power Platform, Microsoft 365 Admin Centre, and Azure Services.
  • Working knowledge of enterprise mobility & security, including Intune MDM & MAM, Entra ID, Identity, Information Protection, Threat Protection, and Cloud App Security.
  • Experience in Microsoft Teams implementation, governance, and administration.
  • Expertise in Exchange Online, on-premises Exchange, and hybrid Exchange environments.
  • Active Directory / Entra ID management experience.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft licensing and experience managing Microsoft licensing and Azure subscriptions.
  • Experience with 365/Azure service health monitoring.
  • Proficiency in PowerShell.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical milestones.
  • Strong experience leading implementation projects of Microsoft 365 workloads and new features.
  • Experience in creating Power Automate flows for task automation.
  • Proactive approach to changes in the Microsoft ecosystem, ensuring alignment with cutting-edge technology.
  • Strong capability in producing and maintaining technical documentation.
  • Proven experience in large enterprise environments managing multiple technology services.

Desirable Experience and Skills:

  • Recognized higher education in an IT-related field.
  • Certifications in Microsoft 365 (e.g., MS-102).
  • Network Security qualifications.
  • Familiarity with legislation relevant to Government/Public Sector IT.
  • First-line support experience for Windows and Mac devices, iPhones, Microsoft Office 365, and printing services.

Additional Information:

A minimum of 60% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although attendance at other locations for official business will also contribute to this requirement.
