Job Title: Junior Commissioning Engineer

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Junior Commissioning Engineer to join our team at MDE Consultants Ltd. As a Junior Commissioning Engineer, you will be responsible for the commissioning and testing of complex electro-mechanical and automation systems in the automotive test industry.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Inspect and fault-find on bespoke electrical system installations on-site.
  • Calibrate and set up electronic data acquisition, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Set up and perform PID tuning of standard automotive control loops.
  • Configure automation software to suit specific channels and interface components.
  • Configure test sequences according to customer specifications.
  • Create/modify system configurations and software to achieve a range of functionalities.
  • Integrate third-party hardware into test cells and facilities.
  • Perform test runs and gather results.
  • Develop automation sequences using standard automation software tools.
  • Create custom system functionality based on customer requirements.
  • Follow commissioning steps and checks to ensure system functionality.
  • Work with customers to achieve system sign-off.
  • Collaborate with commissioning and site managers to produce time schedules.
  • Provide initial customer training on system operation.
  • Conduct customer service visits for calibration, fault-finding, and rectification.
  • Support internal test departments when required.
Requirements:
  • Self-driven and proactive, with strong time management skills.
  • Solid electrical understanding, including the ability to follow drawings and diagnose issues.
  • Ideally possesses a degree in engineering or a relevant electrical qualification; experience in a similar role is desirable.
  • Basic knowledge of programming/software development, ideally in C# or Visual Basic, with an eagerness to develop industrial programming skills.
  • Familiarity with protocols such as Ethernet, Serial, EtherCAT, CAN, and AK protocol (over Ethernet/Serial) is a plus.
  • Strong fault-finding skills with the ability to apply engineering principles to real-life problems.
  • Understanding of the automotive industry (engines, battery tech, powertrains, etc.) is advantageous but not essential.
  • Willingness to work away from home during the working week, with occasional overseas trips (up to 28 days).
  • Capable of spending nights away per year; 80% site-based role, with 2-3 overseas trips per year (2-4 weeks each).
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a professional client-facing demeanor.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office and computers.
  • Holds a full UK driving license, with the ability to secure business insurance.
  • Must have indefinite UK right to work; visa sponsorship is not available.
